Don Buhl – Siehl Prize
An internationally renowned bee expert, the former leader of one of Minnesota’s most diversified dairy companies and an innovative leader in pork production are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Siehl Prize in Agriculture.
The prize is awarded annually by the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Recipients are chosen in three categories: knowledge (teaching, research and outreach); agribusiness; and production agriculture. Read More.
Dr. Cameron Schmitt – 40 Under 40
Cameron Schmitt grew up watching his veterinarian father, David Schmitt, treat cows, cats, horses, dogs and any other patients his clients brought to the clinic. That experience inspired him to pursue a career as a veterinarian, but his practice is far different and more specialized than his father’s.
An Iowa native, Schmitt earned his DVM and MS degree from Iowa State University. Henow is a part owner and member of the senior management team with Pipestone Holdings, a large swine-management company based in Pipestone, MN. The company operates offices in Pipestone, Independence, IA, Ottumwa, IA and Shanghai, China. Schmitt manages the Independence office, which employs four other veterinarians. Read More.
Casey Neill – Early Career Agribusiness Award
Dr. Casey Neill, nutritionist at Pipestone Grow Finish, is the recipient of the Outstanding Early Career Agribusiness Award, presented during the 2016 ASAS Midwest Section/ADSA Midwest Branch Joint Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dr. Neill grew up on a diversified farming operation by Cummings, KS. He graduated from Kansas State University in 2004 with a B.S. degree in Animal Science and in 2005 with his M.S. in Swine Nutrition. After completing his M.S., he joined Christensen Farms in Sleepy Eye, MN as a Research Coordinator. In this position he provided daily oversight to their reach program and provided leadership to study design and developing new research.
In 2007, Dr. Neill began employment for PIC as a Technical Service Nutritionist where he formulated diets for 174,000 sows in commercial production around the world, was a core member of their nutritional research team, and was the primary author for the PIC Nutrition Guides in 2008 and 2011. In 2013, Casey was hired by the Pipestone Grow Finish as their first company Nutritionist. In his current role, he formulates diets for 230,000 sows for Pipestone Management in 6 states and wean-to-finish diets for 1.5 million pigs.
Dr. Neill and his wife Shanna have a son Ryan.
Jon De Jong –
ASAS Midwestern Section Animal Science Young Scholars
The Young Scholars program recognizes and features the research accomplishments of recent Ph.D., graduates or current Ph.D. students in the advanced states of their program. Jon received the Young Scholar award for the Feed Processing Section. De Jong’s primary research focus has been on feed processing technologies and how feed quality can impact growing and finishing pigs. The research he presented focused on evaluating pellet quality/degradation during the manufacturing and delivery process.
