County fair, and livestock show season is underway. These are great events that celebrate agriculture and our rural communities. We at Pipestone encourage everyone to attend and support these events.
The presence of swine at these events poses a biosecurity risk for all of us that work on and visit hog farms. Both PRRSV and PEDV are present in swine populations during the summer months.
Remember: Contact with pigs, livestock trailers that haul pigs, and the premises that house swine at these shows is high level biosecurity hazard.
If you have swine contact as defined above, please take the necessary precautions before returning to a farm. These include the appropriate amount of downtime and personal sanitation/hygiene.
Always feel free to contact a Pipestone veterinarian at 507.825.4211 with any questions.
Thanks for your efforts at protecting the health of the farms and enjoy your time at these events throughout the summer!
